Welcome, fellow violin lovers! Today I would like to show you my favorite way to learn how to play the folk song, Hot Cross Buns. Now this is a really, really old song, and in the song, we only need three notes. We're going to play it on the E string of our violin, and we're going to use an E, an F sharp, and a G sharp. So let's get started with our very first step, which is to sing the song. And when we sing the song, I like to use some hand motions. Okay. So it's going to go like this,

(Singing) Excellent. So the next step that we're going to do is show the finger numbers that we need for our violin when we play with our left hand. So when we play, we work on going like this, two one oh, two one oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, one, one, one, one, two, one, oh.

And the next step, we're going to do finger taps with our left hand. So we want to take our bow hand our right hand and hide it right behind our backs. Now put up your hand into a good stop sign position, right about where you would have your violin come out and you want to tap your fingers together, nice and closely. The two will tap right on the top of the thumb. So we'll tap two one oh, two one oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, one, one, one, one, two, one, oh.

Now the next step you want to get just your violin. And once you have your violin in position, you want to put down your first finger and then your second finger. And we're going to do the song exactly with the right fingers. Two, lift the two. One, lift the one, oh. Put down the one and two. Play two, lift the two. Lift the one. Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, one finger down. One, one, one, one. Two, lift the two. One, lift the one. Zero.

Next, you want to get your bow. Now put down two fingers and place your bow on the E string, play two, lift the two. Play one, lift the one. Play zero. Put down the one and the two, play two. Lift the two, play one. Lift the one, play zero. No fingers, oh, oh, oh, oh. Put down the first finger. One, one, one. Two fingers, two, one, oh.

So that's our song, Hot Cross Buns. And I hope that you're able to keep practicing it with me and also on your own. If you want, there is a free sheet music download for the music in this video from virtualsheetmusic.com.
