Hi, welcome to LivingPianos.com. I'm Robert Estrin, and a viewer asked, what does it mean when a chord comes out of a piano? Not the kind of chord you play, but I mean an electrical chord. And there are a few simple possibilities here. One is that the piano has a player system. Many pianos can be retrofitted or even come out of the factory with player systems that pianos can play themselves, and of course those have to be plugged in. Now the good news is the pianos can be played normally as an acoustic piano, and you wouldn't even know they have a player system except for that electrical chord, which is a dead giveaway. But what if a piano has a chord coming out of it, but it doesn't have a player system? What else could it be? Well, many of you may be aware of the damp chaser system, or the piano lifesaver system. Now this is a humidity mitigating or humidity adding system for pianos. If you're in a harsh environment, let's say you're by the beach and you like to leave your windows open, who wouldn't, right? So you have heating rods that engage whenever the humidity gets above a certain level. There's a humidistat that measures it, and the heating rods come on, and it can help to stabilize the soundboard. And conversely, if someone is in the desert and there's no way to humidify the whole room, there's humidity adding systems for pianos, and of course these must be plugged in. And there's another one, and that is a piano silent system.

Did you know that pianos could be retrofit with a silent system so you can play them through headphones? Now you're not actually hearing your piano, you're hearing a digital piano, but it's being triggered by the action of the acoustic piano.

There again, of course, the electronics must be plugged in, even though the piano is playing acoustically when you don't have the system engaged. And lastly, believe it or not, there's a possibility that the piano, even though it looks exactly like a baby grand or an upright, could be a digital piano. Sometimes they put them in cabinets that are identical to acoustic pianos, and they look just like regular pianos, but they have a cable coming out of them, and indeed they are digital pianos. Now those are all the ways I could think of that you might have a cable coming out of the piano, unless you have some really unusual lighting system that would require electricity. Any of you have any other ideas, leave them in the comments here at LivingPianos.com, your online piano store. Again, I'm Robert Estrin. Thanks to all you subscribers.

We'll see you next time.
